Dual Language Immersion Program

The Dual Language Immersion Program integrates native Spanish-speaking students and native English-speaking students, and academic instruction is provided in both Spanish and English.

The overarching goals of our Dual Language Immersion Program follow the three pillars of Dual Language Education:

  1. Bilingualism and biliteracy.
  2. High academic achievement.
  3. Socio-cultural competency.

Program Model at Veterans

Our Dual Language Immersion program follows the 90/10 model beginning in TK-1st grade. This means that students receive 90% of instruction in Spanish and 10% of instruction in English throughout the day. Beginning 2nd Grade and onward, English instruction increases by 10% each year until it reaches 50% of instruction in both languages in 5th and 6th grades. Our Dual Immersion Program Model has an English component teacher in the lower grade (K-2nd) enabling the primary teacher to always be a Spanish model. However, in the upper grades, our program follows a self-contained setting where the primary teacher serves as a model of bilingualism, by clearly separating and having designated language of instruction periods in each language. Our program model begins at TK and runs through 6th Grade. We do ask parents to commit to the entirety of the program (TK/Kinder through 6th grades) to ensure student’s bilingual outcome.

Veterans Dual Language Immersion Program Goals

The Veterans Dual Language program promotes bilingualism and bi-literacy, grade-level academic achievement, and cross-cultural competence in all students. The Veterans Dual Language program is an additive program where students maintain their native language while adding another language and they develop pride in their own culture while developing an understanding of others.

There are 3 Program GOALS for our Veterans Dual Immersion Students. We aim to ensure that all of our students who promote from our school have the following skills:

  1. Bilingualism & Biliteracy
  2. Academic Achievement
  3. Cross-cultural Competency

To support these goals, we ensure that Native English and Native Spanish Speaking students learn in a classroom together. All students have the opportunity to be first language models and second language learners. We utilize several resources to support our program goals. Academic achievement and biliteracy tools include the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education, Common Core en Español, the Benchmark Adelante curriculum, District Dual Language Blueprint Masterplan, as well as additional resources to supplement core curriculum. Additionally, our teachers engage in ongoing professional development and collaboration throughout the school year

Dual Language Immersion Program Staff

Our Dual Language Immersion teachers possess a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential and hold a Bilingual Authorization, also known as the BCLAD (Bilingual, Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development) certificate, which qualifies them to meet the needs of English Learners as well as permitting them to teach in a second language.
